Did it!

Achieved this month’s goal of 15 miles!  Now to consider the goal for September.

Also, not sure if it was 2 runs in 3 days or because I went out this afternoon but my legs felt less enthusiastic than normal.  However, my pace was a smidge up on Friday’s (which was my best up to then) so it can’t be all bad.

And yes I did put the right shoes on this time.

Some days!

I never got around to posting about my personal trainer session on Tuesday.  I worked hard with plenty of arm work.  My shoulder and arm still haven’t forgiven me.

Today I decided to get out for a run.  And things started conspiring against me from the minute I made that decision.  The clouds gathered and an up-to-then sunny morning soon had rain bucketing down.  I waited for it to slow down and the sky to start to brighten before getting my shoes on.  After all, I’ve got to learn to run in the wet sometime.

So, mindlessly put my shoes on and headed out.  I didn’t notice till near the end of the run that I had my “day” shoes on and not my runners!  My “day” shoes are a walking shoe style so, hopefully, no damage done (and probably why I really didn’t notice).

When I run I use MapMyFitness to log it.  Handy little app on my phone that sends all the data to the website so I can analyse it to death later.  Except today, for some reason, it threw a fit.  It was happy to start recording the time taken when I pressed start but decided not to start logging the distance gone until nearly 6 minutes in.  So I was shocked when I finished my run and saw my mins/mile time at 17 minutes and change!  Blimey!!!!  I walk faster than that and seeing as how I’d done a couple of long (for me) runs I knew it was wrong.  Soon corrected when I got home and on to the website.

The gods had obviously decided today was a good day to test me!

The run itself was marvellous.  Two longish runs and a short one – where I noticed the footwear faux pas and called it quits.  I pick up niggles easily enough without being foolish.  It felt good to be chugging along.  And equally rewarding was the relatively quick recovery between runs – though I possibly need to walk a bit faster as time seemed to pass by way too quickly for the distance covered.

And as I look out the window right now, the clouds are breaking open and the sun is coming out again.  <sigh>

Oh my!

I went for a shuffle round the neighbourhood this morning, choosing to ditch the fixed “run x/walk y, repeat z times” schedule for a “run and walk as required until had enough” schedule.  Without trying I got my best average mph over 2 miles – 4.67!  Still postively sedentary as running goes but to me it’s as good as an Olympic gold medal.  The longest run stint was 0.3 miles and I managed to repeat that here and there.  Again, not exactly setting the running world alight but enough to give me a smile.

I think I will stick to the more relaxed run/walk sessions, rather than the fixed.  Why?  After doing some thinking I realised that when I do the fixed stuff I tend to get running-related injuries.  When I do the relaxed stuff I don’t get anything like as many (though the score’s about even on injuries preventing running due to non-running related ones).  So I’m going to listen to my body more and follow its lead.

Taken the plunge

On Friday I finally summoned up the courage to contact a personal trainer, someone to help me set up some strength training and an overall fitness programme to complement the running.  I go and see him tomorrow.

I’ve also been watching some triathlon events on TV and found I fancied the idea, almost.  You see, I’m not a fan of fish in the flesh.  You won’t get me walking round the aquarium section of the pet shop – yet I can happily walk round the aquaria tourist attractions.  Go figure!  So the thought of donning a wet suit and swimming in open water (with the fishies!) was more than I could bring myself to do.

So imagine how happy I was when I discovered there IS such a thing as a duathlon.  These consist of run – bike – run.  Sounds like something I could work up to.  Plus, some of them are team events.  Hubby’s running days are probably over but he does like his bike.  So we could form a 2 person team.  I’d do the running and he could do the riding.

I’m also planning to hit the pool (no fishies in there, lol), hopefully sometime between 7 and 9am for their ‘proper’ swim sessions.  It’s a great non-weight-bearing exercise that works the muscles not worked by running/cycling.

I’ve really got the exercise bit between my teeth.

Don’t it feel good

I pulled on my running shoes for the first time since tweaking my MCL back at the end of May.  Not wanting to go back on the injured list I opted to go back to 30 second run/2 min walk with 6 repeats.  I really expected to be out of breath and all sweaty before finishing, so was pleasantly surprised when I wasn’t – I got warm but no rivers of sweat running everywhere.

I also felt a slight niggle just above the pelvis on the right hand side – between the spine and the hip bone.  This niggle and I are old friends.  It sometimes sets off my sciatic nerve and piriformis ache.  Just another nudge towards going to see a personal trainer for some core strengthening work.

Afterwards my right thigh was tight, as usual.  I don’t know what it is with this muscle but it’s always tighter than the left (and it was the left MCL that went).

It was good to be out there again.  All those feel good endorphins are whizzing round my system.

This month’s goal is to do 10 miles.

Need to overhaul the wardrobe again

Two weeks ago tomorrow I tried on a pair of size 14 jeans.  They fit nicely and I wore them for several days before putting into wash.  Now normally if you wash jeans they shrink a little.  Not for me this time.  They seem to have grown a little.  So today I tried on some size 12 jeans – AND THEY FIT!!!!!!  Admittedly they’re a little snug – and will no doubt shrink a little in the wash – but THEY FIT.

Once we get into September I’ll be blitzing the wardrobe.  I kept some nice trousers (size 16) because, well, I never expected to go down this many sizes.  I’ve gone down from a size 18 to a size 12 (3 sizes, as we size in even numbers here in the UK).

This week just gets better and better.

Weigh in

Another 0.5lb on, making me 1lb above target.  Still in range though, but I must get back in the groove.

Today was our group’s Woman of the Year competition.  I was shocked during the past week to receive a letter telling me I’d been nominated.  I managed to find a couple of photos of me in the bad old days, wrote a bit of a blurb (which I duly ignored and winged it) and thought “not a hope in hell”.

There were 5 of us to do our thing in front of everyone else.  Standing up in front of people to speak is NOT my favourite thing.  My mind went blank and, as I said above, I winged it – severely editing the 2.5 sides of A4 I’d prepared down to not even a side.   Musta done something right because I WON!!!!!!!!!  I was presented with a sash, a certificate and an orchid.  Took me a few minutes to stop shaking.

I’ve no idea what comes next, though there is a national final.  My consultant will fill me in later.

So, if any of you are struggling with your weight I can recommend SW.  I haven’t found it difficult to follow, and it’s got me from eating 5 a year to 5 (or more) a day.  If it can do that for me it can help anyone.  If you already belong to a group, then try to stay to the chat bit after weigh in.  That’s what I put my success down to (and my stubborn-ness when I really want to do something).

And remember, above all, this is not a temporary change to your eating regime.  No, it’s meant as a lifetime commitment.  If what you were eating before was gonna keep the weight off it would have done.  It didn’t work then, it won’t work now.  Not that I’m 100% on plan at all times.  I have the odd day off here and there, and the odd day where I’m part on and part off.  Any questions, please ask.

Weigh in

Sorry it’s a day late.  This “lovely” weather is playing havoc with my sense of self.  So much so that I have been making poor food choices for 3 weeks now.  Yet I have lost a net total of 2.5lbs.  A 3lb loss followed by a maintain followed by this week’s half pound gain.

That was the motivation I needed to stop messing about and get rid of the last pound and a half by Monday – even if I have to amputate something   lol .

As you’ve probably noticed, there’s not been much getting off the couch in recent weeks.  Well, as long as this heat lasts there won’t be much in the next few weeks either.  My knee seems to be bearing up reasonably well.  My arm twinges if it gets in a breeze for too long.  I am ready to get out there and knock off some 3 mile walks before slowly easing back into the running again.  Just need the heat to go away.

Weigh in – Slimmer of the Week

3lbs off and SotW.  1lb to go.

It has been a fun week in a very not funny way.  Hubby’s surgery went according to plan, as is the recovery.  Unfortunately the recovery includes lots of pain and just when you think you’re about done with that it ramps up even more for a few days.  This is where we’re at right now and it’s tough on both of us.  The running up and down stairs has got the Body Magic ticking along nicely.

The stress of seeing your loved one in absolute agony and there’s nothing you can do is hard to take.  So, my appetite is down and I’ve been eating a little ‘off-plan’ – not as much as I would have done last year so the SW way has obviously gotten ingrained.

Roll on next week.

Weigh in

Another half pound off.  Not sure I deserve it after the excess alcohol and two lots of proper fried chips during the past couple of weeks.

Anyway, it has inspired me to get the last 6lbs off by 1st July.  That’ll see me at target – for now, at least.  I’m still leaning towards dropping the target another 11lbs but will have at least a month at the current target to see how I go.

To be honest I never thought I’d make this first target.  The little voice in my head kept telling me that I’d lose a few pounds and then put it all back on again with interest so why was I bothering.  I’d been approaching a new stone number for a few weeks, dithering between 0.5lb on or off, or maintain.  I got fed up of that so told the voice to get lost!  The following week I broke through to a new stone number and haven’t looked back.  OK, so there have been a few see-sawings here and there, but they were self-inflicted by getting carried away with syns.

Can’t wait for July to come!
